Use this guide for Outlook.com, Hotmail, live.com, and similar personal Microsoft addresses. Many personal Microsoft 365 consumers use the same IMAP endpoint.
0rd connects over IMAP (SSL on port 993). It does not use “Sign in with Microsoft”. You typically need a Microsoft app password (requires two-step verification).
What you need
- A Microsoft account that can receive mail at the address you want to archive
- Ability to turn on two-step verification and create an app password
- A 0rd account at 0rd.eu/archive
Work / school Microsoft 365 (tenants)
Company or school tenants often disable IMAP or require OAuth-only sign-in. 0rd does not offer Microsoft OAuth today. If IMAP is blocked, ask your admin whether IMAP + app passwords (or an equivalent) are allowed. If not, that mailbox cannot be connected with the current 0rd IMAP form.
1. Enable two-step verification
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com → Security.
- Turn on Two-step verification (Microsoft may call this two-step verification / advanced security).
2. Create an app password
- Still under Microsoft account Security, open Advanced security options (wording varies).
- Under App passwords, create a new app password.
- Name it
0rd Archive(or similar) and copy the generated password.
If you never see App passwords, two-step verification may be off, or your account type may not support them.
3. Confirm IMAP is allowed
For Outlook.com / Hotmail consumer mail, IMAP is normally available.
For work/school Microsoft 365: in the Microsoft 365 admin centre, IMAP may need to be enabled for the mailbox. Without that, 0rd cannot connect.
4. Enter the mailbox in 0rd
- Sign in at 0rd.eu/archive and open Archive.
- Under Connect IMAP archive, enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| IMAP host | outlook.office365.com |
| IMAP port | 993 |
| IMAP username | Your full email address (for example you@outlook.com or you@hotmail.com) |
| IMAP password | The Microsoft app password (not your everyday Microsoft password, if 2SV is on) |
- Choose Start archiving.
Host note
outlook.office365.com is the usual modern IMAP host for Outlook.com and Microsoft 365. Older docs sometimes list imap-mail.outlook.com. If one host fails with a clear connection error, try the other — keep port 993.
If something fails
- Authentication failed — Use an app password, not your normal Microsoft password, when two-step verification is on.
- Connection / IMAP errors on work mail — Tenant policy may block IMAP. Check with your admin.
- Username — Always use the full address, including
@outlook.com,@hotmail.com, or your custom domain.
Notes
- Archiving uses IMAP only; you do not set SMTP in 0rd.
- Revoke the app password in your Microsoft account security settings if you stop using 0rd for that mailbox.
